What are the main functions of the kidneys?

The main functions of the kidneys are to remove waste, regulate fluid balance, maintain acid-base balance, secrete hormones, remove metabolic byproducts, and regulate blood pressure.

Waste is removed from the kidneys by tiny units inside the kidneys called nephrons. Each nephron contains thousands of tiny filtering units called glomeruli or renal corpuscles. As blood enters the renal corpuscles, waste products, excess substances, and water in the blood are filtered, forming a fluid called filtrate. This filtrate travels through the kidney tubules, where complex processes of reabsorption and secretion occur. During these processes, useful substances are reabsorbed and waste products are concentrated to form urine. Finally, urine from the kidneys passes into the bladder, where it awaits elimination from the body. This process removes waste products from the body and maintains fluid and electrolyte balance.
